DRE Checklist, Step 1: Breath Alcohol Test
A Drug Recognition Expert (DRE) must follow a checklist that breaks down into twelve components. The next few blogs will examine each step in detail.
Step 1: Breath Alcohol Test
When the DRE is first summoned, the first question they will ask is:
- “What were the results of the subject’s breath alcohol test?”
This question is critical because the DRE has to determine whether alcohol alone accounts for the impairment they observe. If a test wasn’t given, then the DRE will ask the officer to administer one. The DRE will be examining if the suspect is under the influence of more than a combination of alcohol and other drugs.
