Driving to a Chargers Game? Be Careful How Hard You Tailgate

There is nothing like the start of football season to remind us that fall is definitely here.

Along with watching the game, many fans will be taking part in some good ol’ tailgating. While celebrating with all that good food (and of course, drink) is part of America’s pastime, tailgaters need to pay attention to personal safety.

If you plan to tailgate some upcoming football games, keep yourself safe by remembering a few things.

Tailgating Rules

While many of us remember tailgating in the Qualcomm Stadium where the Chargers used to play, we now have to get used to tailgating at the StubHub Center. At the Chargers’ new home, tailgating is only allowed in the Silver, Gold, and Bronze parking lots; and only for vehicles that have a parking permit. The Red, Blue, and Green parking lots on the California State University campus may be used for parking, but there is absolutely no tailgating allowed in these lots.

Also, follow any local law enforcement rules or requests. In 2013, a Chargers fan was fined for continuing to throw a football around, after police had asked him to stop. While that fan was, in fact, breaking the law, the charges were later dropped by a judge. But that case does showcase how important it is to listen to the police at all times. Not all cases will get dismissed, and a fine or arrest is no way to enjoy a football game.

Never Drink and Drive

Lastly, but certainly not least, keep an eye on how much alcohol you consume, particularly if you plan on driving home. Driving under the influence is a very serious offense in California, and those caught could end up paying large fines, get put in jail, and even have their licenses suspended.

While alcohol is certainly a part of most tailgating (and having a drink or two is fine), imbibing more than that could put you over the legal limit. And enjoying two or three hours of the game may not be enough time to bring that level back down below .08%.
